FIJI Travel Tips

Fiji is a grouping of 332 islands in the South Pacific, and has a terrain that is generally made of volcanic mountains, most of which are long since inactive. Fiji has a warm tropical climate, perfect for beachside holidays.
Population: Fiji's population of around, 875,983 people is made up of indigenous Fijians (50%), Indians (47%) with Europeans, Chinese and South Pacific Islanders making up the remaining 3%.

Electricity: 240 volts. International adaptor is required.

Climate: The best months to travel are is late March through to early December. Maximum temperatures in Fiji rarely move out of the 31C to 26C range all year round. Fiji does have a wet season. The wet season is normally from November to April. Annual rainfall on the main islands is between 2000mm and 3000mm.

Passport and Visa Requirements: Australian citizens must have a passport that is valid for six months beyond the date of arrival in Fiji. No visa is required; a visitor permit can be obtained upon arrival and is valid for up to four months

Currency: The local currency is the Fijian dollar FJ$. There is no limit to the amount of money you and take into Fiji. There are ANZ, Westpac and colonial banks in Fiji. There is a 12.5 per cent VAT on most services and goods.

Transport: Getting around Fiji is not that difficult as the local and inter-island transportation network is good and affordable as well.
There are Taxi networks throughout Fiji, they are plentiful and inexpensive, and it is wise to ask how much the fare will is going to be before you agree to travel. The public transport is quite good, with buses, minibuses and carriers the ideal way to get around and mingle with the locals. Cheap and inexpensive, you can find bus stations in most downtown areas. There is also a range of car rental companies in Fiji.

Tipping: Tipping is not encouraged anywhere in Fiji. Tip with a smile and 'vinaka', which is Fijian for 'thank you'

Airport Customs: To increase your safety, there are new rules for taking liquids, aerosols and gels on flights into and out of Australia.
Each container of liquids, aerosols or gels in your carry-on baggage must be 100 millilitres or less. All the containers must be sealed in a transparent, one-litre plastic bag. You are only allowed one plastic bag. Any transparent resealable bag of one litre capacity or less is allowed.
You may still carry on board prescription medicines. Baby products and non-prescription medicines that you need for the flight are also allowed. Proof of need may be required.
When you get to the screening point, you will have to surrender any liquids, aerosols or gels greater than 100ml that you still have with you, including duty free. The new rules also introduce random frisk searches as part of the screening process.

Duty Free: The following items may be imported by persons 17 years of age and over into Fiji without incurring customs duty:

  • 250 cigarettes or 250g cigars or 250g of tobacco goods.
  • 2.25L of spirits or 4.5L of wine or beer.
  • Goods to the value of F$400 excluding personal effects.
Note: The Value Added Tax (VAT) on most items in the Fiji Islands is 12.5%.

Tourism Refund Scheme (TRS)
If you have purchased liquid, aerosol and gel items and wish to make a TRS claim (for example wine, perfume etc) you can pack these goods into your hold baggage, and proceed to the TRS facility with your tax invoice, as per current practice.
Customs staff at TRS facilities will ask you a series of questions to enable them to determine the validity of the claim.
Oversized goods, including oversized liquid, aerosol and gel goods such as cases of wine, should continue to be treated as they are now by presenting them to the Customs Client Services Desks located land-side in all international airports. Passengers who have their goods sighted at Customs Client Services Desks are still required to present their passport, international boarding pass and tax invoice at TRS facilities.
